Lookalike Beetles

Pair the rainforest finds, colour by colour. Sort the field cards in a rainforest clearing at dusk with pixel Charles Darwin. Turn two cards at a time, pair the beetles, butterflies, toucans and frogs, and watch the card colours closely in this free memory game.

Twist: Some finds come on two card colours, and only the same picture on the same colour is a pair.

Parody. Charles Darwin has no involvement in making these games and does not endorse them. The character is an original pixel-art caricature.

How to play

  1. Click or tap a card to turn it over, or move the cursor with the arrows (WASD) and press Space or Enter. Turn two cards: if they match, they stay face up.
  2. Some pictures come in two colours, on a parchment card and on a blue card. Only the same picture on the same colour is a pair, so a blue beetle and a parchment beetle do not match.
  3. Each pair is worth 20 points, plus 5 for every level. A cleared grid adds 50 points and 5 more for each second left, then a bigger grid is dealt.
  4. Two different cards turn back after a moment, so try to remember them. The round ends when the clock reaches zero.
  5. M switches sound, P or Esc pauses, and you can share your score at the end.

The story

Far from home, in a steamy rainforest clearing, a long day of collecting is almost over. Pixel Charles Darwin has filled his notebook with drawings of beetles, tree frogs, orchids and finches, and now the field cards must be paired up before the light goes. The puzzle that keeps him busy past dusk is the one he calls Lookalike Beetles.

The forest likes to play tricks. The same beetle can turn up on a parchment card and on a blue card, and two colour forms are not the same find, so only the same picture on the same colour makes a pair. Every pair goes into the collecting box, and each sorted batch brings a bigger one. When the clock runs out, night falls on the clearing. How many batches can pixel Darwin sort?
