Before he paints a vase of flowers, pixel Vincent van Gogh likes to know exactly how many blooms he is dealing with. He sits in the garden with his sketch pad, scatters petals across the page and tallies them up. He calls the morning ritual Petal Tally Sums.
At first there are only a handful of flowers, but the bunches soon grow until the page is crowded with petals. Counting them one by one is far too slow; the secret is to spot the little clusters and add them together. Get every tally right and the vase is ready to paint before the sun moves.
